My first time visiting Europe was a long holiday that began after a 14 hours flight on a plane. We stayed in the historical capital of Rome and didn’t waste any time as we explored the city to spend our new year there. This one year journey across the world was an Opportunity to introduce my Family to new cultures. I browsed the internet and read an article serving as a helpful souvenirs guide for travelers planning a visit because I found it hard to choose a suitable gift for a reasonable price.
I wanted at least one item or souvenir from each country and region we visited. Our travels took us from Rome to Milan and Naples and we even planned an upcoming Trip to see the Dolomites and Puglia in the Future. I kept an eye out for examples of authentic Italian Culture and Art while shopping at an outdoor market. I picked up a beautiful antique map and a Doll representing the Befana tradition for Epiphany along with some Neapolitan Christmas Items.
I am a huge fan of the epic movie Gladiator starring Russell Crowe so I desperately wanted a Roman gladiator shield to have it as a souvenir. I wanted the chance to recreate my favorite scene from those flicks right at the place where it happened at the Colosseum.

While near the Trevi fountain in Rome I saw some ladies on a date who chose to make fun of me when I decided to buy more toys. For 15 to 20 euros I got a set that includes a helmet for my head that was too big and clearly meant as a kid’s toy. After bagging that I also bought a replica Roman soldier’s helmet to add to my war souvenirs for my room Decor at Home. Such items might not last long but they beautifully represented the great Roman empire. We left Rome excited for the rest of our trip through Europe.

Moving part way through our third trip we reached Verona the home of Shakespeare’s romantic play Romeo and Juliet where I felt the love. I couldn’t resist buying a small statue of the star crossed lovers. because as you might have guessed a love souvenir is special. The fact is that lugging a suitcase from place to place gets difficult when you are accumulating heavy and easily breakable things. Even though they are breakable and heavy I continued buying in Pisa where I found a stone bible and a model of the leaning tower for 1 euro which felt like a real deal.

Later in Venice I picked up a small stone Lion of St. Mark near the Ducal Palace for just 3 euros because I simply could not resist. We explored Tuscany and Bologna grabbing Designer Leather Goods and a bag with many Pockets. We also enjoyed the local Cooking by tasting Treats and snacks like taralli storing them in a beautiful ceramic jar from the Amalfi Coast along with a lovely piece of a magnet from Taormina and Lucca to bring a taste of Italy back home. We were excited for another buy in Venice.
I was saving the best for last during our incredible holiday over in Europe. I decided to purchase a medium scale replica of Florence’s Duomo along with another Huge replica of the Duomo of Florence. When you look at the photos of it you can truly behold the amazing colors and intricate details that give it a certain je ne sais quoi. I have no doubt this is my absolute favorite souvenir from the entire Italy experience. The best part is that it was not an expensive purchase at all and beats any other Duomo of Florence items. I found this magnificent treasure at the San Lorenzo street market for only 15 euros making it an absolute bargain.
Best Souvenirs from Italy
How to travel with souvenirs
If you are thinking how in God’s name I could manage to carry all these delicate souvenirs during my two years of exploring, the answer is that I did not simply drag them everywhere I went; instead, I followed a carefully plotted itinerary including designated drop off points at various friends’ homes around the world to safely store them as I traveled, planning to pick up everything once I was truly ready to return home.
While finishing up a very long 24 months of continuous travel, I ended up flying home through Japan and Mexico, intentionally taking an out of the way connection through Scotland and Dubai rather than a standard direct airplane because it ended up being a quicker and cheaper way to route my baggage without leaving behind my cherished goods.
On a related Ed. note, a fellow collector named Raphael showed equal commitment to this luggage strategy, leading us to co write a Souvenir Finder Tip Sheet detailing exactly What to buy where our Guest Author highly recommends you grab a traditional mask from Venice alongside some bookshelf friendly replica statues which you can easily seek out at the famous Ca’Macana or just gather beautiful Replicas and other small statues found near popular tourist sites.
Finally, What to know before you pack your bags is that you absolutely must Bring plenty of bubble wrap from your own home because safely securing those delicate breakables is extremely tricky and proper packing materials are surprisingly hard to find while shopping across Italy.
Best Foodie Souvenirs from Italy
During my last Trip to Italy, I realized that the ultimate way to capture the true Spirit of the Country is through its incredible Gastronomy and that is exactly why my favorite Souvenirs are always edible. I usually avoid traditional Shopping for typical tourist trinkets because there is a huge Risk that those items will just turn into forgotten Waste and create unnecessary Clutter in my house over Time.
You simply need to verify that your finds comply with local EU customs regulations before packing them up so your culinary memories arrive safely for you to enjoy.
Wine

I am a massive Fan of collecting Italian Wine because it stands out as one of the most memorable Souvenirs you can possibly bring back from Italy. Touring the local Vineyards is an absolute dream and an unforgettable Experience that gives you the Chance to learn about centuries old Viticulture and the fascinating science of Enology including the precise Fermentation methods used to craft every single Vintage. You will definitely want to Purchase a few Regional Favorites directly from a producer’s private Cellar especially a bold Barolo from Piedmont or a classic Chianti from Tuscany not forgetting a crisp Prosecco for your future celebrations back Home.
If you are short on Time or traveling on a strict Budget a fantastic alternative Option is to simply visit a regular local Grocery Store where you can easily find Delicious and surprisingly Cheap Bottles. It is always a huge Surprise to discover that a standard 5 Euro Bottle straight off the supermarket shelf can taste so incredibly refined. Just make sure to plan your Shipping and Logistics carefully so all your fragile liquids arrive safely and completely intact.
Olive Oil

A Classic Italian Souvenir to Ship Home is Olive Oil, a healthy option and regional Gourmet specialty adding luxury to your Italy travel collection and pantry. If Lucky to Visit the Fall Harvest, you witness the Agriculture and Pressing yielding Fresh, Fragrant, Cold pressed Extra Virgin oil or EVOO, capturing the Terroir as Decanting from the press reveals pure liquid gold of high Quality. This Popular Culinary Export is a Year round gift sold in Metal Cans or a Glass Jar.
Near the Coloseeum, I bought a vessel with a beautiful pattern for a memorable price of €9.5, though a slightly more costly aesthetic heart shaped glasswork or large Heart Shaped Bottle holds immense value and design for a decorative kitchen display. After cooking, simply reuse the empty bottle.
Spices
Spices are one of the cheapest and easiest foodie souvenirs to transport from Italy, helping you quickly transform any dish.
Truffle Set
To taste the rare delicacy of Italy at home, simply Drizzle a few drops of authentic truffle oil on your standard night pasta as a dressing. Finding these luxurious ingredients can be tricky; while many shops on Earth are selling a premium package of truffles for a retail price of €25, I did a quick comparison and managed to find a hidden shop offering a massive discount.
I did not hesitate to grab this local specialty from their display shelve for just €14.5, making it an absolute bargain purchase. These presentable and valuable food goods make the perfect gift for foodies who love high end gourmet culinary items, so always hunt for a great deal on this expensive luxury Truffle to get the best souvenirs in your hand.
Italian Cookbook
To easily Recreate some of my absolute favorite Italian dishes once I return home, I always make sure to Pick up a traditional local cookbook when I am out shopping in Italy.
Cured Meats

No trip to Italy is complete unless at least one meal consists of fruit, cheese, wine, and savory cured meats picked straight from the local markets. Authentic prosciutto, parma ham, and dry sausages travel surprisingly well, making them great souvenirs to carry home. Just be aware that if you are heading back to the US, strict customs might force you to eat every last meat treat before landing!
Peppers

I love adding a bit of heat to my meals, and picking up some local peppers from the market is my favorite trick. You can buy them Dried in vibrant strings or completely jarred in spicy oil, and either format is a fantastic option to pack in your suitcase.
Zesty Lemon Liqueur

If you are exploring Campania and the surrounding area near the Amalfi Coast or Sorrento, grabbing a vibrant bottle of Limoncello is simply a must. It serves as an incredible souvenir, allowing you to easily mix a perfectly refreshing spritz long after you return home.
Grappa

I learned that an authentic grape based hard liquor is incredibly easy to find in almost any town. At some point on your trip, you will undoubtedly be served a complimentary shot strictly on the house by a generous local restaurant owner right after a large meal. If you find yourself becoming quite partial to that intense fiery kick, buying a high quality bottle of grappa is a wonderful way to bring a traditional Italian souvenir back with you.
Pasta
I was surprised to learn that some of the most famous Italian dishes, like an authentic Carbonara, are traditionally made with dried pasta rather than all fresh stuff, making this delicious food an easy to transport souvenir. I personally love shopping the local market for every interpretation of the same basic recipe, and you will find a wonderful selection and variety of regional edible gifts that perfectly capture local tourism.
My favorite option is a classic rigatoni shape, but it is also fun picking up novelty travel gifts for my besties from a shop selling a special pack of Special Shaped Pasta. With so many Italy themed pasta shapes available, including a Ribbon, a Heart, the Colosseum, and even a humorous Penis shaped one, comparing shops for the best deal is a must.
Traditional Balsamic Vinegar

Forget the cheap stuff because authentic traditional balsamic vinegar from Modena takes many years to make, and its high cost perfectly matches that intense culinary commitment. Expect to spend in the higher range of Euro for a single traditionally made bottle, the absolute quality is entirely worth it. This is easily one of the best souvenirs you can pack from Italy since this specific product is incredibly difficult and expensive to source abroad, yet perfectly easy to transport in checked luggage. Best of all, it lasts a very long time; I am currently working on my latest batch, and even after a full year of cooking, it is not even half gone.
Spreads

I always pack jarred local spreads because they are incredibly easy to carry home. From a basic olive paste to a more adventurous find like cibreo, eating them smeared across a piece of crostini is absolutely bound to help me feel right back in Italy.
Hard Cookies & Sweets

I am quite partial to the Hard cookies and local sweets of Tuscany, especially traditional cantucci. I personally believe these are a fun and inexpensive way to bring the authentic taste of la dolce vita back to your home.
Gourmet Chocolate

While Artisanal chocolates are more readily associated with Belgium or France, Italy also makes some incredible ones for foodies. Look for these cocoa treats in the Piedmont region, arguably one of the most underrated regions, or visit the town of Modica in Val di Noto, Sicily.
For a flavourful snack, the world-famed Italian chocolate brand Venchi offers qualitied dark chocolate, milk chocolate, and dairy-free sorbet at any local Venchi shop, gelato cafe, or snack shop. A premium chocolate bar needs to be bought here because, in comparison to Hong Kong, it is half price. Don’t miss the chance to purchase Gianduja, hazelnut, pistachio, or Chocoviar confectionery deals as valuable travel souvenirs.
The original blue themed branding of Baci Perugina is sometimes replaced with a pink color for a limited edition Ruby Cocoa beans specialty. This 100% natural Ruby confectionery is an adorable gift for friends, using natural beans to create a unique flavor and aesthetic.
Each pink chocolate souvenir contains hidden romantic fortune quotes or messages, making it a collectible seasonal luxury treat. This special dessert represents the riches of Italian romances, where a message of love acts as a surprise inside the packaging. Gourmet export cocoa bars like these are the best sweets to bring home for a romantic value.
Cheese

Hard cheeses like aged parmigiano-reggiano transport more easily than soft cheeses, and with a little ingenuity, you can safely get the most flavor back home.
Coffee Culture and Treats

To enjoy authentic Italian coffee at home, you should pick up one of the moka pots that Italians use to make their daily brew. Since bars are an enormous part of the local culture, these stovetop brewers are a huge and great way to bring the experience back without being willing to splurge on a very pricey espresso machine. It is true that while a professional unit costs a fortune, a simple moka is convenient to carry and creates a unique specialty caffeinated drink using high quality Arabica coffee beans.
For a portable energy boost, Ferrero’s Pocket Coffee is a must-buy Italian-made confectionery often found at a better value than in Hong Kong. These liquid espresso-filled pralines are made of bitter chocolate and milk chocolate, containing a caffeine kick that provides a melting treat for family and friends. You can find packaging in 18 pcs or 32 pieces for around € 5 to 8, which is much cheaper than Ferrero Rocher snacks.
Affordable Tortellini

When shopping at a local supermarket or grocery marketplace, I was immediately attracted to the prepacked dry tortellini available for a remarkably affordable price of just €0.99. Placing this cost in context, these pasta-related goods offer incredible savings compared to the high expense of international imports in Hong Kong.
Finding such deals in Italy allows you to bring home authentic culinary products and a regional selection of packaged pasta varieties that represent excellent value. These local food items are perfect travel souvenirs because they are easy to export in your suitcase, making the buying of such value goods a smart comparison against the price of pasta back home.
Pan di Stelle’s Mooncake
Doing research on the internet for the best souvenirs often leads to highly recommended specialty treats like Pan di Stelle from the famous Mulino Bianco Italian bakery. This tempting chocolate lava cake or Mooncake is a culinary indulgence that stands out among other supermarket products, offering a creamy filling and rich cocoa flavor. Bringing home such authentic bakery snacks is much better than buying imported retail sweets, as this pastry and dessert selection offers a true culinary specialty for any food lover.
Lemon Candy

Popular lemon shops in southern Italy, especially those throughout Sicily, are absolutely seen plenty of across the Italian world for selling limochello candy. To be more honest, while those specific limochello candy packs can be pricey at around €9 per pack, I bought a better value lemon candy at a Venchi’s chocolate shop. At a price of only €5.9, or 5.9 compared to 9, it was a better deal for high-quality lemon and olive oil sweets.
Decor and Collectibles to Buy in Italy
Home decor is one of my personal favorite things to buy in Italy. After living there for four years, I realized that long-term travel is about acquiring a couple of meaningful pieces to ground your home base. These carefully chosen items treasure your memories and bring a smile to your faces every day after you return.
Ceramics and Pottery

Ceramics remain popular across Italy because of the beautiful hand-painted choices found along the Amalfi Coast and Tuscany. In particular, my personal weaknesses when shopping for ceramics are their favorite souvenirs like a traditional jar.
Porcelain

You can find elegant dishes and tiles all over Italy to bring home as beautiful porcelain.
Murano Glass

Incredible examples of Murano glass feature distinct colors and patterns also found in castles, palaces, and opulent buildings around the globe. This incredible souvenir from Italy is available for purchase across the country, but you will find the lovely best selection when purchasing especially nearby Venice.
Perugia Tablecloths
The popularity of the beautiful tablecloths from Perugia dates back to the 13th century. If you are visiting Umbria, it is absolutely worth picking up one of these linens today.
Door Knockers

Door knockers are one of the more eclectic Italy souvenirs on my list. While shopping at a market, you will certainly find an incredible selection in Italy shops; if you are lucky enough to visit a flea market or antique fair, looking for these things can bring back luck as well.
Christmas Ornaments

The best way to go shopping in Italy for Christmas ornaments is at the annual markets, but you can, of course, find beautiful ones year-round. They are easy to buy and pack, making them excellent gifts for people you love back home.
Burano Lace
On the island of Burano near Venice, Italian lace is as cherished as Murano glass, having been popular with the wealthy for centuries. Among the best-known historical customers was Leonardo da Vinci, who bought a piece for the altar of the Duomo in Milan. Today, while you will find many a hybrid or machine made sale, it is the handmade touches using traditional methods that take months and cost thousands of dollars. Without a doubt, a stunning lace textile ranks among the most looking souvenirs for any collector.
Venetian Masks

No trip to Venice is complete without buying a Venetian mask, with options raising the price from a cheap version to roughly thousands for a true bespoke original. This Italian souvenir is a great option for everyone, from a child needing a history lesson to fans of Nicole Kidman and Stanley Kubricks film Eyes Wide Shut.
I suggest a visit to the oldest mask making workshops like Ca’ Macana, where Venetian artisans use traditional methods and designs that are never repeated. The staff encourages photos, though they have a no touch policy, and they are helpful if small children or small visitors with a short attention span get bored.
You can even try your hand at a painting workshop, where you grab paintbrushes after a long theoretical introduction about the craft’s 800 years ago origin.
Shopping here is a fun experience; you’ll be dazzled by intricately designed colorful Venetian masks lining the walls, some even featuring autographs from Tom Cruise. Whether for Carnival or dressing up, these each mask hand-made crafts respect tradition and capture the atmosphere of this love/hate city. Don’t be easily impressionable by mass-produced options; do your best internet research to find the shop that created the delicate and colorful specialty favorites that fascinated the group.
Original Art
I believe a piece of original art ranks as one of the most unique and memorable options. It is not necessarily prohibitively expensive to purchase small crafts, sketches, or enormous oil paintings and statues. These are the best ways to bring the spirit of Italian art home.
Best Italy Souvenirs to Wear
I prefer Italian souvenirs you can actually wear, as they are the best options when shopping in Italy with an eye for clothes and accessories.
Perfume

Not just any perfume will do, though; choose one purchased at a historic and beautiful location. Consider purchasing a scent from the 13th-century Santa Maria Novella Pharmacy flagship in Florence or the Merchant of Venice store while shopping Italy in Venice.
Leather Goods

Leather clothing and accessories, including jackets, bags, belts, shoes, and more, are the most popular artisanal goods sold in Italy, especially Tuscany. These vary wildly in price and quality, so if you are looking to get beyond standard tourist offerings, Scuola del Cuoio in Florence is a great place to look. You cannot go wrong sticking to a budget range either; my partner Jeremy has used a fairly inexpensive Italian wallet for many years now.
Gold Jewelry

Italian gold is known for high quality, as most sold in the country is at least 18 karat. An enormous number of artisans make sure there are plenty of pieces you will fall in love with. You will certainly pay a bit more than the average market souvenir from Italy, but the most memorable place to purchase is undoubtedly the many shops along the Ponte Vecchio in Florence.
Watches

Italy is known for high fashion, and shopping opportunities certainly includes watches. If you are looking to splurge on a timepiece anytime soon, this is a great place.
Handmade Shoes

One of the most popular souvenirs from the Amalfi Coast and nearby spots like Capri is a pair of leather sandals handmade onsite. This tradition extends beyond the coast, as you can find options in Tuscany as well.
Luxury Clothes and Accessories from Italian Designers
Casual observers of the luxury brands scene will doubtless name several big names like Valentino, Prada, Armani, Versace, Fendi, and Dolce & Gabbana when thinking of Italy. If you are looking to splurge on designer pieces, this is absolutely the place because the selection is incredible and you actually often pay less here than for the same goods abroad.
For the best deals, skip the main retailer and try souvenir shopping at a luxury outlet; you can easily hop on a shuttle bus near Florence to reach centers like The Mall or Barberino.
Miscellaneous Treasures
When it comes to miscellaneous things to buy in Italy, a high-quality leather wallet is a top choice; my partner Jeremy loves the wallet he found in Tuscany, and since wallets also make great gifts, they are a smart pick while shopping Italy.
For something more delicate, beautiful stationery is one of the best things to buy, with Florence and Venice being especially known for their paper crafts. It is a particularly wonderful Italian souvenir for honeymooners as a memorable way to write thank-you notes once they get home.
For Catholics, especially those visiting the Vatican, a rosary is a particularly meaningful reminder of a trip to Italy. In addition to rosaries, Catholic icons and crucifixes are also popular religious souvenirs in Italy, and you can find them for sale over in gift shops at famous churches and cathedrals, making them a very reliable option.
Finally, whether used or new, books are one of the best ways to remember your trip. English-language books are fairly easy to find while shopping Italy, as gift shops and museums are a great place to look in addition to English-language bookstores where I have collected several over the years.
Inexpensive (But Fun) Souvenirs from Italy
My friends often ask me how my collection compares to the Best Souvenirs from Ireland, but my expertise truly lies in finding the perfect Italy souvenirs. I have learned through my travels that spending just a single Euro or a few Euro is enough to secure items that take up only a small sliver of space in your luggage.
For instance, magnets are incredibly popular souvenirs that many people collect around the world. At just a few Euro apiece, it is absolutely worth waiting to find one that visually sticks out. I once spent an entire week simply looking for the right Sicily magnet as an example, and I still adore the one I finally ended up with.
Another excellent option is postcards, representing the ultimate combination of being inexpensive, wonderfully easy to pack, and easily personalized. They are the best budget souvenirs in Italy because they tend to run anywhere between 0.50 and 1 Euro.
You should always consider getting a couple extra to place on top of your pile, and definitely send a postcard beautifully filled with memories from that exact day right there to yourself. Because it usually takes quite a while to actually receive postcards back in the USA, this clever trick will wonderfully help you relive your favorite Italy memories after you return to your home a few weeks later. Finally, do not forget to grab those last few Italy souvenirs with your spare change before heading to the airport.
Expert Tips for Shopping in Italy
When shopping for food items, always check for DOP and IGP labels because Italy takes food incredibly seriously. These different certifications ensure a product can earn its title by stating it was made in a particular place with particular ingredients using a particular technique, which is a great example of Italian gastronomy.
I always shop your region because, while you find beautiful Italy souvenirs all over the country, the best possible selection is specific to where you are visiting; for example, consider shopping for olive oil in Tuscany or glass and masks in Venice.
You won’t need to stick to a plan exactly—since shopping spontaneously is part of the fun of travel—but having a general idea will help add structure to your browsing and limit indecisiveness.
Consider quality over quantity, as it is incredibly easy to end up buying more knick-knacks than you really need. Once you get home, you will be very glad if you noted the place and year of purchase on the bottom of decor pieces or ornaments.
For a reliable option, double-check transportation and USDA regulations for Americans before packing your checked luggage; if anything is not allowed, you have a good excuse to eat them during the trip! Finally, it is definitely worth inquiring about the cost of shipping for heavy or delicate purchases
