I have spent my entire life just driving through the first town on the 134-mile stretch of the Lake Superior shoreline between Duluth and the Canadian border, but when a friend moved there, it became the perfect excuse to explore it thoroughly.
I quickly realized this charming town of approximately 3500 residents is truly worth discovering and is an ideal spot to plan a perfect visit. You might assume this area is strictly a warm weather destination because in the warmer months it is home to endless hiking trails, miles of rugged shoreline, and provides entry to the pristine Boundary Waters.
However, think again! It is also the perfect base for a winter weekend adventure. Being an outdoor lover, I have driven north just a short 20-minute drive to enjoy exploring endless trails, frozen waterfalls, winter hiking, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and catching cotton candy skies at sunset.
This stunning town offers something for everyone to enjoy. During your day, you can relax on the beach, immerse yourself in local history at the museums, or take in the natural beauty and gorgeous views of Lake Superior. Alternatively, you can hop on the trail near the Castle Danger Brewery or the historic lighthouse. The route provides a wide, level path that guarantees great lake views and convenient access to beautiful beaches along with striking rocky outcroppings.

On really cold mornings, if you are lucky, you might get a glimpse of low fog gently resting over the water, which is truly mesmerizing. It is also a perfect place for a moody winter sunrise because it offers an incredible view looking East along the rocky shoreline facing north. If you venture to the opposite side of town, about 1-2 miles away, another gem awaits.
To reach this next spot, you will Park in the small parking lot located off Water Plant Rd. Walk directly behind the small building at the back end of the parking lot to find a short trail that takes you down to the stunning beach.
I always suggest visitors Have a picnic at Black Beach because the striking black sand provides a magnificent contrast against the waves. Picnics here aren’t just for the summer months either! Bring a thermos filled with a hot drink or bring a portable camp stove to make a delicious warm lunch while taking in the coastal breeze. The Victorian era red brick lighthouse is a stunning sight that sits perched on a small hill directly overlooking the waters of Agate Bay in Two Harbors. Added to the national registry of historic places in the 1980s, this beautiful lighthouse now operates as a museum safely managed by the Lake County Historical Society.
You can even spend the night by booking a memorable stay at the Lighthouse bed and breakfast. Inside, fascinating exhibits detail the history of old Lake Superior ships. Outside, the vintage Frontenac pilot house proudly sits right on the Lighthouse front lawn.

You should Hike out to the other lighthouse. Yes, this town of two harbors features two lighthouses! In Two Harbors, this second beacon is located at the very end of the breakwall in Agate Bay, sitting intimately near the massive ore docks.
It is an exact twin to the North Shore favorite, the Grand Marais lighthouse, since both were built utilizing the exact same design. Just take a simple .2 mile stroll down the flat concrete breakwall to easily reach this iconic lighthouse.
Visit the 3M Museum
The massive corporation known as 3M, which is currently based in Minnesota’s Twin Cities metro area, is entirely responsible for inventing Post-Its, those damage-free command strips, the classic green scrubbies in your sink, and so much more.
The famous 3M got start right here at the turn of the 20th century when a bunch of ambitious North Shore businessmen decided to form a humble sandpaper company. Today, you can visit the 3M Birthplace Museum right in downtown Two Harbors. This two-room museum is charmingly housed inside the old Dwan Law office building where the company’s articles of incorporation were officially signed back in 1902.
Because it is a very small museum, you should Set exhibit expectations low, but do not hesitate to ask plenty of questions; the knowledgable docents love helping visitors learn about the corporation’s humble origins. The rocky Agate Bay Beach is the perfect place to practice your rock skipping technique or search for the Bay’s namesake banded stones known as agates. The beautiful bands on Lake Superior agates are naturally formed by iron.
I recommend walking right at the water’s edge while hunting because the water causes the quartz eyes to make the agates sparkle, making them easier to spot. For rock skipping, carefully select nice flat rocks and remember, it is all in the wrist.
Get beers at Castle Danger
To Get beers, visit Castle Danger, which opened in 2013. Castle Danger Brewery is an absolute Two Harbors institution and an important third place for the community, deeply beloved by locals and visitors alike. While you can pick up their beer at liquor stores in the region, nothing beats having it on tap, and they usually have a great growler selection or crowlers.
If you are just passing through or plan on staying a while, grab a pint or two. Spend time on the amazing outdoor patio where they often host food trucks and live music. Their seasonal Mosaic Fresh Hop IPA is my very favorite, the Aurora Haze is a new classic, and the Cream Ale is fantastic.
You must Visit one of the best breweries in Minnesota in downtown Two Harbors. The Castle Cream Ale is my all-time favorite. Visit the Edna “G” tugboat
Make sure to Visit the Edna G tugboat. Located on the backside of the ore docks in Agate Bay in Two Harbors, it acts as the town’s unofficial mascot. The Edna G tugboat is a stalwart tugboat that was built in 1896 and spent its entire career in Two Harbors helping the massive ore boats dock until it retired in 1981.
You can swing by Paul Van Hoven Park on the Agate Bay waterfront to see it anytime, but to actually visit Edna and tour the tug, you must go on very specific days of the year. The best chance of touring the tug is during the Two Harbors Heritage Days in mid-July.

If Visiting Two Harbors in the winter, Check out and Ski the Erkki Harju trail. The Erkki Harju is a beginner friendly ski trail and is perfect for beginner skiers to test the trails. It features a gentle loop with only one or two big downhill sections, making it an incredible little loop. This ski loop is lit at night and is located just outside of town.
Stop at Cedar Coffee Company
You must Stop at the Cedar Coffee Company. Located in a cedar grove on the northwest edge of town, it is hands down the best coffee shop in Two Harbors. I always find an excuse to stop when passing by during their operating hours.
It is a great spot for a hot beverage and boasts an excellent food menu, so I often grab lunch and a latte to go. It is the perfect place to Warm up with coffee if you need a spot to warm up between winter activities.
This perfect spot is a local treasure. Grab your favorite hot beverage and a freshly baked pastry; the blueberry coconut scone is incredible.
While there, you can borrow a pair of snowshoes for free and explore the grounds behind the building. If you want to Get Coffee from Cedar Coffee Co and wanted to get into the forest, it is just outside the woods. All coffee syrups are made in-house, and you can snag a delicious sandwich.
Fun fact, I used to work there, and it is still one of my favorite places to hang out. The shop gets super busy in the summer, but it is always worth the wait. No other coffee drinks have ever measured up since my stint there.
Visit Tettegouche State Park
Head up just over a half hour drive to Visit Tettegouche State Park. You will find incredible waterfalls, scenic overlooks, expansive shoreline views, and more. To Hike along Lake Superior here is hotly debated in Minnesota outdoor communities, but it is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful destinations in the state for good reason.
It has got a little bit of everything: lakefront trails, stunning views, gorgeous beaches, rugged terrain, and impressive waterfalls. In the warmer months, the park is packed with visitors, but in the winter, you virtually have the place to yourself.
From the Visitor Center parking lot, walk around the building and follow the trail down to the left. This will take you to Lake Superior Beach, offering incredible views of the rugged shoreline to the north.
Continue to Shovel Point, which follows the shoreline up the cliff to a point where you can enjoy a perfect view of the iconic Palisade Head. All in, this trail is about 1 mile.
Explore the paved bike trails
Explore the paved bike trails. When you grab coffee at Cedar Coffee Company, you might notice a paved bike path as you enter the shop’s parking lot. The coffee shop actually shares a building with the Spokengear bike shop.
The path smoothly loops around the northern edge of Two Harbors, ending at the Burlington Bay Municipal Campground where it connects to the Sonju Trail. Eventually, these paths will connect to the Gitchi-Gami State Trail, which will allow you to bike all way up the shore to Grand Marais, though that is a long way from reality right now.
Grab a bite at Black Woods Bar & Grill
To Grab a bite after a long day of hiking and exploring, grab a delicious bite at Black Woods Bar & Grill. Located in Two Harbors, their burgers are delicious and very satisfying after a day of outdoor adventure. They also offer gluten free options and a wide range of other menu options.
Go to the historic depot
Go to the historic depot. It is the best place to learn about Two Harbors history. The historic Duluth and Iron Range Depot in downtown Two Harbors houses the Two Harbors museum, which is proudly run by the Lake County Historical Society.
Exhibits offer information on Two Harbors origins and Lake County as a whole, with plenty of information on area industries. Though it is a small local museum and the Exhibits can feel a little chaotic, there is a fair amount of artifacts that feel significant if you were born and raised in the community.
Some real gems include a detailed model of the Edna G tugboat, plus extensive information on area railroads and ore shipping, which are my favorites. As a Pro tip, if you pan to go to all three historic sites in downtown Two Harbors that are operated by the Lake County Historical Society (the Depot, the 3M Birthplace Museum, and the Lighthouse), you should buy a bundled ticket at your first stop.

You should Stock up on pasties and provisions from Louise’s Place. Louise’s Place is a sweet little grab and go café right in downtown Two Harbors. In addition to regular breakfast and lunch items, their freezer is fully stocked with homemade, take and bake dinner items like rich curries, hearty shepherd pies, and traditional pasties. The recipe actually comes from the owner’s paternal grandmother who was fiercely Cornish.
I always pick up a couple pasties for an easy, delicious dinner. In addition to the main restaurant, Louise’s Place operates a small shop offering a great selection of authentic U.K. grocery items.

You must Drive the Scenic North Shore Drive between Duluth and Two Harbors. Ditch the busy freeway and opt for the scenic route right beside Lake Superior. Dotted with charming resorts and unique small businesses, taking the old Highway 61 is the perfect way to start your time.
My Favorite stops are the New Scenic Café, Russ Kendall’s Smoke House, and Moon Market on one of the best scenic drives on the North Shore Drive. You can hop on to many beautiful pull offs and find a number of spots to stop and support local artisans.
Settle the Betty’s Pie & Rustic Inn Café pie debate
Take time to Settle the great Betty’s Pie and Rustic Inn Café pie debate. Just north of Two Harbors, right along Highway 61, sit these two cafes internationally known for their pies. Betty’s Pies is an absolute North Shore institution located about 2.5 miles outside of town; in my lifetime, Betty’s has transformed from a teeny roadside operation into a massive restaurant behemoth.
Yet, just 10 miles farther down the road, people strictly swear by the competition. Personally, there is something special about the Rustic Inn’s Raspberry Creme Pie that I highly prefer, but the only way to make up your own mind is to sample at both places, which is a delicious prospect. Grab pie at the coziest place to grab a quick bite to eat, or Head out for a full delicious meal to taste the best pie they offer.
Gooseberry Falls
As you go up the North Shore, you must stop at Gooseberry Falls, the North Shore’s most popular waterfall at Gooseberry Falls State Park, just a 15-minute drive north of Two Harbors.
Visit the popular Upper Falls without a crowd, even though in the warmer months it is among the most busy, crowded state parks in Minnesota. It offers easy access to a stunning cascade of waterfalls and a beautiful boardwalk down to Lake Superior.
In the winter months, visitors virtually have the place to themselves, so I recommend hiking or snowshoeing along the 2.5 mile Gitchi Gummi trail that follows the Gooseberry River back. To Hike Gooseberry Falls is one of the best family friendly things to do; head to this popular state park that features a large waterfall and plenty of easy hiking trails making it a must-stop.
Split Rock Lighthouse
Further up is Split Rock Lighthouse, the North Shore’s icon, a quick 20 minute drive up Highway 61 from Two Harbors. You can visit Split Rock Lighthouse State Park to check out great hikes like the Split Rock River trail, Day Hill, and Little Two Harbors along the way.
I love to Watch the Sunset on the best sunset hike near the area; just head and hike the Day Hill trail, a beautiful trail that takes you up above the cliffs and bluffs of Lake Superior for stunning views of the Lighthouse and beautiful shoreline.
Head up for sunset to get the best views on a trail that is about one mile uphill; the way back is a quick walk down, but ensure you walk back before it is too dark. It is a perfect hike even when it is darker out.
Capture the iconic Split Rock Lighthouse from below in the warmer months by taking the over 150 steps down to the shoreline for an incredible view and image of this iconic view on Minnesota’s north shore.
Unfortunately, in winter, the stairs may be closed for safety reasons, so Stop in the Split Rock Lighthouse State Park Visitor Center to learn current trail conditions and see if an alternative trail is open that takes you down.
As an alternative, go inland on a stretch of the Superior Hiking Trail for hiking the 4.5 mile Split Rock River Loop Trail. The Trail provides access to frozen waterfalls and river crossings that are beautiful in any season.
Hike the Split Rock River, a great hiking trail just outside the park. Hop on the Split Rock River wayside trail which takes you past one waterfall on the creek and another waterfall on the river, but since it gets a little muddy, pack sturdy hiking boots.

The massive Superior Hiking Trail runs the length of Minnesota’s North Shore, starting at Jay Cooke State Park and ending near the Canadian border north of Hovland. Visit the Superior Hiking Trail Association storefront in downtown Two Harbors to buy maps, get guidebooks, and learn more about the numerous trail sections so you can choose a section of the trail to explore for a day hike.
It is my favorite in any season, and I never miss a chance to stop and enjoy the view if my schedule and the weather allows. I encourage you to hit the park’s trails; at the very least, get out to the St Louis River to see the iconic swinging bridge just behind the Visitor Center.
